There's a New Sheriff in Town

The sociology department had its annual welcome back luncheon for faculty and grad students on Friday. Each year, there is a theme of some kind, and this year it was "crazy hats!"* When confronted with this kind of thing, the typical academic's response is either to ignore it completely or to show up in the lame-est, least-crazy hat anyone could imagine. Not in our department. There were a lot of wacky chapeaus including what I think was probably the coolest commercially-produced hat I've ever seen--the fish and teapot from the Cat in the Hat.
But this guy really took the cake. I give you none other than the new Chair of the Sociology Department in his first official public appearance in that role:
__________
* I told you this department knows how to party!

Simply Wonderful!
go rory! soccer hat rules! wow, i feel shortchanged -- this never happened when i was there!
What a team player!
Wow. All we managed were some departmental t-shirts, and I was the only faculty member who even bothered with that! Kim
Rory looks like a Marvel Supervillain --- Doc Socc, maybe, whose origin story is that he was continually passed over when it was time to choose teams in grade school, and who subsequently used his genius to develop the FootieTron (pictured), a prosthetic attachment that enhanced his football skills a millionfold. But once he tried it on, an accidental burst of gamma radiation made the FootieTron meld with his brain and now Doc Socc is on a quest to make THE WORLD play soccer FOREVER in teams of HIS choosing. Muaahahahahahaha. Special powers: tactical planning, team organization, long throw, kills enemies from a distance with deadly-accurate soccerbomb passes, close up by hacking expertly at their ankles. Noted ability: when captured, convincingly feigns mortal injury (writhes on ground clutching leg or head) to generate diversion and/or sympathy. Then escapes.
That is perhaps my favorite picture EVER!
Wow! Kieran's analysis is amazing. The Doc Socc Supervillain (and the accompanying background story) is just what I had in mind when I stuck a soccer ball on my head. Actually, it was part of my daughter's Holloween costume. She looked cute. I look like Neil Young after an unfortunate accident.
The "welcome back" event is always a blast. Our graduate students contribute so much to the festive atmosphere. They help to make sure that the old timers like me can remember that being a sociologist can be a fun job. Silliness and productivity can mix together very well, I think.
rory
so great! this is what i miss dearly about nd soci!
I think it would be a great detail for a novel for a department to go into receivership and be taken over by an outside chair from parts unknown who wore a mask the entire time.
